New York, day 5

Day 12 - Tuesday 22/6/10

The boys had a sleep-in and slow start while I took Emily to a dance practice. When she was done, we headed off for a walk down 5th Ave to Central Park.

St Patrick's Cathedral
First stop was the NBA Store, which was a little bit of heaven for the boys.

They both chose Lakers t-shirts, and then we continued our walk down 5th.

Trump Tower

Next stop was F.A.O Schwarz

where we headed straight for the Big piano

We didn't spend too long there, much to Sam's disgust. He was in toy heaven but we weren't there to shop so after 30 minutes or so we headed out and checked out the Apple Store. I don't have any photos, but it was an amazing shop!

We spotted the Plaza Hotel which was exciting for my little Home Alone 2 fans

and then entered Central Park. We talked about taking a horse and carriage ride, but decided just to walk around for now.

At that stage we had a toilet emergency. Sam needed to go and there wasn't a toilet (I mean restroom) to be found! Crazy in such a popular place! Emily, Harry and I had a game of checkers at the Chess and Checkers House while Alex and Sam went in search of relief.

When they finally came back, we wandered over to the Carousel.

I wanted to check out Tavern on the Green but none of the park staff members knew where it was, which I found very odd. So we headed up towards the Mall, passing by the BandShell

and stopping at Bethesda Fountain

It was lunchtime so we consulted our map to try to find somewhere to eat. We located a cafe that seemed to be close by but we walked around in circles and couldn't find it. Again we asked directions from various staff members who couldn't help us.

We ended up leaving the park and walking out onto one of the 80 streets and getting hotdogs from a street vendor. Once fed, we re-entered the park and went in search of Strawberry Fields.

I love to read all of the plaques on the benches, and spotted this one for Gwyneth Paltrow's dad.

We found Strawberry Fields and went out to see the Dakota Building

John Lennon's White Room

We walked back across to Strawberry Fields which was anything but peaceful. There was a guy speaking who said he was the "Mayor of Strawberry Fields" and another guy busking and they were constantly abusing each other and threatening to call the police on the other one! It was crazy!

Next we walked down towards the Boathouse, spotting lots of dog walkers along the way

Hans Christian Anderson statue

We wanted to hire a rowboat and go out on the lake, but it was maximum 4 people per boat so we left it.

Alice in Wonderland statue

We left the park and walked over to The Plaza and checked out the lobby
We weren't dressed nicely enough to stay for afternoon tea, so we split up at that stage and the boys headed back to the hotel in a pedi-cab while Emily and I walked back up 5th Ave for some more window shopping.

I loved this Louis Vuitton store

A girl's best friend

You're fired!

I'm not sure what Alex and the kids did for dinner that night as I went out on another girls night out! I met our friends at a lovely Italian restaurant at Columbus Circle for dinner and then we went to the Lincoln Center to see the New York City Ballet, which was just amazing. After the ballet we walked around Columbus Circle, then jumped in a cab back to Times Square where we had a coffee before calling it a night.
