New Bern, NC - Days 1-3

Days 32, 33, 34 - Monday 12/7/10 - Wednesday 14/7/10

These three days were our chance to relax, shop and visit family. We were met at the airport on Sunday night by my aunt and some of my cousins and went back to my aunt's home. We got to sleep in the next morning - no rope drops! - and visited with some more cousins before we packed up into two cars and headed out to Emerald Isle beach. That night we drove out to Havelock to Pizza Inn. I had told the kids about the chocolate pizza at Pizza Inn and they couldn't wait to get to NC to try it but the local branch had closed down. It was worth the drive though as we had a really fun dinner and the chocolate pizza was a hit! On the way home we stopped at Walmart so that Emily could check out the Miley Cyrus clothes range and we picked up a few pieces.

We had another slow start on Tuesday. We split up in the morning, with Alex and Sammy going for a drive around town with my aunt and the rest of us tagging along with my cousin while she ran a few errands and dropped into her work. We all met up at Chick Fil A for lunch and then hit the mall. We bought mainly clothes from TJ Maxx, Walmart and Target. That night the whole family came around for a bbq and swim.

On Wednesday morning my aunt had to work so we went out for breakfast with my cousins in downtown New Bern. After breakfast we walked around the town checking out the bears of New Bern.

New Bern is the home of Pepsi, so don't order a coke!

And it has some really cool antique stores
It was also the first capitol of North Carolina. Tryon Palace was the governor's home in the 18th century.

It was then time to go home to pack and head to the airport where we encountered the most intense security of the whole trip! Being a regional airport, they didn't have an xray machine so they opened all of our luggage and went through everything with a fine toothed comb. When we finally got the okay for our checked luggage, we then had to endure our hand luggage being scrutinised for what seemed like hours. One TSA agent even apologised to me, saying that his supervisor was being ridiculous! We had arrived at the airport 2 hours before our flight time and finally got through security on the final boarding call! I was quite uneasy to find the small aircraft full of smoke! The flight attendant seemed worried as well, but she said that the pilot had assured her that it was only steam because the air conditioner was reacting to the humidity. It was really eerie to take off with what seemed like the clouds on the inside of the plane!

We had another tight connection in Charlotte but we knew we had to hotfoot it to the next gate and we made our flight to Las Vegas in time. We were surprised to see the Strip out the window as we landed and even more surprised to see the MGM Grand right there. We could have walked! We were met by our limo driver who was really friendly and gave us lots of tips. He said he felt bad for us that it was such a short drive so he took us for a tour up and down the strip before dropping us off at the MGM Grand. The limo ride was great and the perfect welcome to Las Vegas!
